This will help to prevent the debris adhering to and staining the instrument.

Hand Scrubbing & Ultrasonic Cleaning

Instruments should be rinsed then scrubbed with an autoclavable cleaning brush before ultrasonically cleaning and the further rinsing and drying of the instrument. At this point it should be inspected and any remaining debris removed. Ensure the joints and hinges are opened during the cleaning process.

Sterilisation/Autoclaving

Steam sterilisation in an autoclave is the only recommended method for use in podiatry.

Lubrication

All jointed and hinged instruments should be lubricated with a proprietary surgical instrument lubricant. General oils and anti seizing agents are not suitable and their use could result in damage to sterilisation equipment.

Where available an effective drying cycle should be employed following the sterilisation cycle or at the very least the instrument immediately removed to dry whilst hot.

Under no circumstances should instruments be left in a damp autoclave for any period of time following sterilisation. Diff erent metals should not be mixed and non stainless steels are not suitable for autoclaving.

Damaged and rusting instruments could leave deposits on other instruments and for that reason should be disposed of and not autoclaved.

The majority of joint malfunction can be traced to poor cleaning and lubrication. Damage to instruments arising from poor maintenance and neglect will not be covered within the warranty provided.
